SMS could be used by a business concern in many ways. SMS can be useful in miscellaneous areas, for example:
2.1 SMS and MARKETING
2.1.1 Definition of problems in marketing:

2.1.2. Contents SMS from a marketing point of view

It is important to understand that more doesn’t necessarily mean better.
The maximum length of A message is 459 characters; enabling you to submit the information as clearly as possible. There is a number (series) of operational constraints of special characters and coding. For example, sending characters Unicode will be long, so the report is limited to 69 characters more often.
160 Characters – sometimes isn’t enough for your message. Hence you should carefully formulate the MESSAGE and insert the most relevant information in it. Be convinced that the messages you write briefly mirrors the essence of the problem Though the number of characters is limited to160, it can be spanned to a 459-character however the SMS would be delivered as 3 SMS. There is a possibility to send much longer messages, but that isn’t convenient for the receiver who would receive the message as separate messages. Fortunately, abbreviations can be used instead of complete words to send more information in a single SMS.
2.1.3. Client Database
One of the positives of SMS in using it as a marketing tool – It can be used anywhere you are and wherever you have access to the internet, and wherever you have your data available making your messages more directional to target audience.

2.1.4. Sender Identification- Forms confidence
Some gateways has the capability and necessary space to fill in a sender ID, the space provided for sender ID can also be used for a company name, title or other informative information. The presence of a sender ID is useful as it invokes confidence with the recipient, the receiver knows from whom he has received the message.

The CRM-systems requires a large budget sometimes exceeding the profit.
Through SMS, this cost is substantially reduced, in some cases by 85% if SMS is correctly and completely automized in a system. In theory this seems difficult, but practically it is very easy to be incorporated into existing systems.
Often companies are on the look for solutions which are effective to clients when they are:
traveling, relocating etc. The biggest problem for them is the fact that potential buyers would be contacted too late. SMS individually manages that problem.
Lot of banks, financial institutions and large firms already started using SMS in their systems and successfully integrated them with the infrastructure i.e. databases, CRM-systems.
2.3 Information / contents
The Internet is evolving. The diversity of material being stored and distributed over the Internet has reached the stage where the original framework that arose out of the need for guaranteeing peer-to-peer communication in the event of a catastrophe become seriously challenged. Accumulating content and presenting it in a logical manner is not an easy task, but is further complicated by the fact that the content usually needs to be requested or “pulled” by the potential reader.
It can serve to a large part of the audience who will receive the information later or in the some cases not at all.
The information can be delivered to the recepients with the help of many communication facilities, such as fax, email etc. Content Delivery with the help of SMS can be automated and would be based on options chosen by the receiver. Many systems have remote emergency systems which has constant control over the functionality. Though it isn’t guaranteed that the person will immediately read the message, it demonstrates that SMS is one of the most reliable sources of information to notify people about relative distresses.
SMS is also used for the notification (warning) of malfunctions in the activity of computer networks, data channels, automatic systems of service (as web-tools, online database) arising during deadlines, considerably reducing the number of the complaints by the clients due to disabled tools, creating a reputation of reliability and thereby gaining a positive public perception.

Different carriers use different standards or protocols, the
common protocols supported by most software is: via modem
(TAP, UCP), the Internet ((SNPP, WCTP) and via email (SMTP).
Software is flexible and often allows for group or scheduled

Public SMS Gateway
Public gateways are often referred to as SMSC or SMS
centers. The centers typically run a robust software
application (like advanced versions of those mentioned
above) and subscribe to a large database that allows for the

appropriate settings. When using an SMSC the sender incurs a
per message charge. Cost will vary depending on the SMSC
used to send the message but its not uncommon for it to cost
.05 per message.

Many of the new mobile phones and those on the GSM network

keypads are rudimentary and not conducive for long messages
but are effective when time is an issue and a concise
message is needed.

Basic Rules for SMS

In addition to permission, there are five key elements that differentiate SMS marketing from traditional marketing. These are also the key success factors for its use. A minimum of 2 factors is necessary for a successful campaign.

Step 1: Planning the campaign

Objectives:

• Why are you communicating via mobile?
• What do you want to achieve?

Limitations:

• Do you need to cap the responses?

Step 2: Creating the campaign

Some SMS Service Providers enable you to create, test and track your basic campaign yourself via your web browser. This can be very useful for simple push campaigns such as; event notifications, requested information (i.e results, account info), “show this message for a free..” style campaigns, staff memos etc. However, the more complex the campaign, the more likely you will require professional help in both the planning and fulfilment of the campaign.

Step 3: Copywriting

• You only have 160 characters-use them wisely
• Be aware of limitations of different screens
• Be personal (it can be an intrusive medium)
• Be targeted
• Talk in the same language as your customers

Step 4: Test , test and test again..

• Test the campaign on different screens
• Test different networks (i.e. Vodaphone, Orange)
• Check to see if the appropriate replies are sent etc
• If it is a competition, plan for unusual/wrong answers and have suitable replies in place.
• Test language, typos and technical (not all symbols will come out as you expect).

Step 5: Measurement and tracking

Some indicators that you may use to measure success of the campaign are:

• Open rates
• Foot traffic (to website etc)
• Offer acceptance
• Replies
• Redemption rate
• Brand awareness…

• Consider timing
• Trial different approaches
• Exploit “landgrab” opportunities by using SMS before your competitors do.
• Use only opt in and give opt out route (the more automated the better)
• Identify yourself

SMS has long been a common means of mobile communication in Europe. It has been available in the US for some time, but hasn’t been widely used. You don’t need a phone with a web browser to use Google’s SMS. Since the information is transmitted as text only, without graphics, only the ability to send and receive SMS messages is needed. At present, the service is only available only in English, through major US wireless carriers like AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Your service plan must allow for SMS messaging also. Use of SMS doesn’t generally count against minutes under most plans, but both your SMS to Google and the answer received from Google will typically count towards messages allowed.

Use of the Google SMS service is free at present, though of course users will need to pay any connection and messaging
charges from their wireless carriers.

Google SMS can be handy for travel in particular. For example, let’s say you’ve arrived at your hotel, and really have a taste for Chinese food. You may be able to use Google SMS to enter “Chinese food delivery” followed by the zip code of your hotel. Google will return, usually in less than a minute, a list of local Chinese restaurants that offer delivery. This is a nice alternative to looking in a phone book, where you may not know the city, and also is handy for situations where you may not be able to connect to the Internet easily.

SMS (text messages) was created as part of the GSM phase 1 standard. What is SMS Text Messaging?

SMS, short for Short Messaging Service, is a text message service that enables short messages of generally no more than 160 characters in length, to be sent to, and transmitted from a mobile phone.

Mobile phones and the use of SMS, are having an un-deniable impact on our daily lives and the methods we use to conduct business. The fact that SMS also provides an enormous opportunity for companies to interact with their customers, is not really well known.

Consider these figures. The ‘Mobile Data Association’ reported that in the UK alone, in a three year period from 2003, over 75 billion SMS messages were transmitted.

In the US, according to the ‘Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association’, the number of SMS messages has grown from 930 million per month in 2002, to 1.2 billion per month in 2003.

Recently, in the Phillipines, SMS Messaging played a major role in bringing down an unpopular political regime. Now that’s a lot of SMS messages.

The ‘Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association’, reported that during 2005, Australians sent more than 5 billion text messages. Considering, Australia’s population is only around 20 million, this is extraordinary.

Popular reality TV shows like Australian Idol, Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, and others, use SMS technology to generate millions of dollars of revenue directly from the SMS votes that will be used to determine the winners.

Case Studies

Case 1 – Around 2,500 mobile phone-users in the town of Lulea, Sweden, volunteered to receive SMS messages of special offers from 150 local organizations. The volunteers were sent an SMS for a well known fast food outlet’s burger offer, 25 per cent of the targeted users took up the offer.

Case 2 – A small club wanting to increase their patrons during slow nights during the week, decided to run theme nights. Having invested in maintaining a database of the clubs members, the club owner prepared and sent an SMS message to his member database, offering a 45% off discount for turning up with the text message. This was done the night prior to the event. The promotion was very successful with 29% of those sent the SMS message, taking up the offer and turning up.

Case 3 – A security business needed to automate and centralize their time sheet process for all of their remotely located security personnel. At each site a supervisor was supplied with a mobile phone with allocated SMS text credits. As security personnel arrived on site, the supervisor would text a keyword and an ID number. These SMS messages were sent to a central administration database, where they updated each officer’s individual timesheet. This process was repeated at the end of the day as officers left. The entire timesheet collection process, that used to take up to 2 days, was almost entirely eliminated. Further, because this process automatically updated the administration database, accuracy and prevention of loss of data was ensured.

Case 4 – A software service provider for media and advertising agents working in film, television and photography, wanted to provide casting agents a quicker and more efficient way to find out if their artists were available for castings. This provider leads the industry in casting solutions by combining, Web and SMS technology. All casting job details are entered into a database, and then queried for artist matches based on set criteria. Artists who match the criteria are then sent an SMS message instantly. Messages are only entered once, personalized, and sent to all of the relevant artists. When received, the artist simply replies with a yes or no. As the message is received at the administration database, records are updated immediately. Casting agents benefited by saving time, reducing costs and accurate recording of events.

SMS as an Effective Marketing Tool

Communication is vital in Marketing. SMS marketing makes it possible to directly interact with customers and provides a cost-effective method of data collection. Many leading companies have included this medium in their marketing strategies, and consequently, the number of companies using SMS continues to grow rapidly.

Client database

An important component of using SMS as a marketing tool is a client database. This database should be maintained with other relevant customer and contact information and of course should contain a valid mobile phone number. If applicable to your area, ensure that you are able to personalize your SMS messages by keeping first names in your database.

Ensure your database is opt-in

The maximum length of A message is 459 characters; enabling you to submit the information as clearly as possible. There is a number (series) of operational constraints of special characters and coding. For example, sending characters Unicode will be long, so the report is limited to 69 characters more often.
160 Characters – sometimes isn’t enough for your message. Hence you should carefully formulate the MESSAGE and insert the most relevant information in it. Be convinced that the messages you write briefly mirrors the essence of the problem Though the number of characters is limited to160, it can be spanned to a 459-character however the SMS would be delivered as 3 SMS. There is a possibility to send much longer messages, but that isn’t convenient for the receiver who would receive the message as separate messages. Fortunately, abbreviations can be used instead of complete words to send more information in a single SMS.
2.1.3. Client Database
One of the positives of SMS in using it as a marketing tool – It can be used anywhere you are and wherever you have access to the internet, and wherever you have your data available making your messages more directional to target audience.
